The Ministry of the Diocese of Madurai – Ramnad is the continuation of the work started by the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions. The Mission was Started in the year 1934.
The work of the American – Madura (now called as Madurai) Mission in Madurai is historic and noteworthy. For example the present Diocesan Office is situated in the area called Ratchanyapuram, in Tamil it means the place of Salvation. The missionaries of the past considered the situation of the deserving girls started an educational institution known as Lucy Perry Noble Institute. The training was given in sewing, weaving and farming. There are many examples for the above efforts. In the centre of the City, Madurai, there is a place called vittavasal, in Tamil means the abandoned gate. During the past, missionaries started a school for the girls who were not taken care.
At present the Diocese consists of six revenue districts. Now the Diocese is taken special care in offering quality education starting homes for the needy students.
The mother mission is called the American Madura Mission.
